Kurdistan Retirement Union appeals to KRG and Iraqi governments
In order to force Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to make justification to retirement pension so it matches ones in Iraqi government, Kurdistan Retirement Union through its spokesman “Osman Sadiq” announced in a press conference that they have made a legal appeal to both governments against KRG officials.
More than a year has passed since the decision of the Supreme Federal Court of Iraq to oblige the KRG to match the salaries of the KRG retirees with Iraq, but so far no action has been taken in this regard. A spokesman for the Kurdistan Retirement Union says “We appeal against KRG authorities that do not implement the decisions of the Iraqi Federal Court”.
On 22 November 2022 the Supreme Federal Court of Iraq issued Resolution 212 for the retirees of the Kurdistan Region. This decision obliges the KRG to implement the United Iraqi Retirement Act No. 9 of 2014, as in all other regions of Iraq, but it has not yet been implemented in KRG controlled governorates.
A spokesman for the union says “A month ago, after a year of this decision. we gave the KRG one week warning to match the salaries of the region’s retirees with Iraq, but they have not taken any action to do so” He also mentions that “after visiting Baghdad twice, they met with the head of the Iraqi retirement union and presented their situation, in return, the president of the Iraqi Retirement Union told them that they could apply the financial entitlements of the region’s retirees to their union and would make a proposal in the entire new year budget”. For this reason, they intend to go back to Baghdad and file legal complaints against all institutions and individuals who are responsible for not implementing the federal court’s decisions.
According to the statistics of the General Directorate of Retirement in the Kurdistan Region، there are about 270،000 retirees، of which 158،000 are civilians and the rest are military retirees.
